Do you support Conservative Bill C-262 which would cut interprovincial trade barriers and amend federal rules to allow Canada Post to pick up and deliver beer, wine and spirits directly to Canadians across provincial borders? Let me know here!

What you need to know about Mark Carney’s EV mandate

July 9, 2025

What the Liberals vow to impose is shocking and nothing short of communist style control.

The Liberal government’s Electric Vehicle (EV) mandate is set to go into effect in 2026. It will force auto manufacturers and importers to make 20% of their new car sales be Zero Emission Vehicles — and by 2035, every single new car sold in Canada will have to be electric. Any company who fails to meet this sales quota must purchase credits from another auto maker who exceeded the 20% quota. The penalty for not hitting the quota and not purchasing the mandatory credits is $20,000 per vehicle. Companies like Tesla who produce only EV’s will benefit significantly from these credits, giving them an unfair advantage in the auto market. Canadians who don’t want or can’t afford a new EV, will be forced to drive older vehicles – as is the case in communist Cuba.

After this mandate takes effect every EV would require a charging station, meaning that within 6 months, Canada would have to increase its number of charging stations by 10 times, from the current number of 60,000 to 700,000. Currently, there is no plan, budget, or timeline for this massive infrastructure overhaul.

There are many places across our vast country in which EV’s are simply not practical. The Canadian Automobile Association found that EV batteries lose 40% of their range in winter temperatures of just -7 to -15. Here in Alberta, where winter can last up to 6 months of the year, we see temperatures drop far below that.

For those who own EV’s and say they save money by not having to pay for gasoline may not yet realize that the Liberal government is going to tax electricity the same way they tax gas. The Liberals will always look for new ways to tax citizens and this is just their latest scheme.

This EV mandate will greatly impact the number of jobs across Canada. If all new cars must be EV’s, Canadians may opt instead to purchase a used or pre-existing vehicle. Therefore, demand will decrease, and fewer new cars will need to be built. Auto industry analysts predict this could result in a loss of 40,000 automotive jobs.

From an environmental perspective, if every single car on the road in Canada were switched to an EV tomorrow, the drop in greenhouse gas emissions would be equivalent to .08% of the total emissions China produces in a year. So, the sacrifice that the Liberals want Canadians to make wouldn’t even undo one day’s worth of emissions in China.

It’s clear that the negatives outweigh the positives here – so why is Mark Carney forging ahead with his predecessor’s extreme policy? It’s simple: he stands to personally benefit from it. Carney’s company, Brookfield Asset Management invests in EV charging infrastructure.

What the Liberals vow to impose is shocking and nothing short of communist style control.

To summarize, Mark Carney’s EV mandate will:

  • Eliminate freedom of choice
  • Increase cost of vehicles
  • Kill Canadian jobs
  • Drive up the cost of electricity
  • Force taxpayers to foot the bill (in the trillions) to update our electricity grid
  • Make Canada’s elitist Prime Minister even richer

Conservatives have been calling for this ideological and extreme mandate to be scrapped since it was introduced, and we will continue to do so. We believe consumers should have the choice to select a vehicle that suits their personal needs and lifestyle. Dictating what Canadians can and cannot drive is wrong, and so is attempting to control an entire industry.
