Update on Stephanie’s e-Petitions

Petitions, either paper or electronic, are one of the most direct ways for citizens to participate in Canadian democracy. They draw attention to an issue that is of public interest or concern. While petitioners cannot directly present to the House of Commons, Stephanie appreciates any opportunity to bring constituent concerns to the attention of Parliament. Currently, Stephanie has been asked by Canadians to present two e-Petitions:  

1. Petition E-7284 Information and Privacy, calls upon the President of Treasury board to “review the Access to Information Act, remove any proposals that dampen transparency and accountability, and consult with the independent Information Commissioner of Canada regarding amendments to the act” 
2. Petition E-7359 Parliament and politics calls upon the Prime Minister of Canada to “attend Question Period on a regularly, weekly basis; and wholly and truthfully answer questions from the Leader of the Official Opposition and all Members of Parliament while in the House of Commons.” 

Both petitions secured well over the number of signatures required, were certified by the Clerk and have been officially tabled in the House of Commons. Stephanie would like to thank everyone who took the time to sign them.

Notably, when Stephanie had the opportunity to table the petition E-7359, a Liberal Member attempted to prevent her from reading it into the record (see video below). The Speaker ultimately ruled against his Point of Order.

Stephanie awaits the Liberals’ response in the Fall.
