Prices in Canada continue to go up under Mark Carney’s government, and many of them are automatic, meaning that Parliament does not approve them (cost of postage, alcohol, passports etc.) Does this increasing reliance on ‘escalator’ taxes concern you? Let me know here!

Update on Bill C-9

April 2, 2026

The Liberal and Bloc amendment to C-9 – which removed religious defence from the Criminal Code – engendered a great deal of concern within Calgary Midnapore. Constituents were opposed to this attack on freedom of religion.

Frankly, Conservatives had serious concerns about C-9 when it was originally tabled by the Liberal government as well,  and you can review some of those as outlined in the House of Commons by our Shadow Minister for Justice during speeches at 2nd Reading.  The Official Opposition agreed to send the legislation to Committee for additional scrutiny and amendment, to see if it could be revised into a Bill Conservatives could support…. But that did not happen. Instead, the Liberals and Bloc joined forces to effectively criminalize religious texts.

As a result, as the Leader of the Official Opposition stated, Conservatives opposed C-9:

Stephanie explained her opposition to C-9 in several constituency mailings (see here and here) — and spoke about it in the House of Commons when the Liberals moved to limit debate on the Bill. She and her Conservative colleagues fought this legislation ever since the Liberals added that contentious clause. They used the Parliamentary tools at their disposal, voting against C-9 at every opportunity. Unfortunately, the Liberals and Bloc voted together to send the legislation to the Senate. It will now be up to Conservative Senators to do what they can to protect our religious freedom.
