Update on Bill C-218 (MAID)
April 2, 2026
Constituents have been reaching out to Stephanie regarding Private Member’s Bill C-218, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (medical assistance in dying). The legislationwould amend the Criminal Code to provide that a mental disorder is not a grievous and irremediable medical condition for which a person could receive medical assistance in dying.
Stephanie has made her concerns about the expansion of MAID very clear, explaining, “We need to protect vulnerable Canadians.” This is one of the reasons Conservatives tabled C-218, and she looks forward to continuing to support the Bill as it moves through the Parliamentary process. Her additional comments on this issue are below:
“Conservatives also brought forward legislation in previous Parliaments (C-314, C-418 and C-277). The goal of C-314 was to protect the vulnerable in our society and C-418 would have protected the rights of health care professionals to conscientiously object to participation in euthanasia and assisted suicide, making it an offence to intimidate a health care professional for the purpose of compelling them to take part, directly or indirectly, in the provision of euthanasia and assisted suicide.
“The bill also would have made it an offence to dismiss from employment or to refuse to employ a health care professional for the reason only that they refuse to take part, directly or indirectly, in the provision of euthanasia and assisted suicide.
“Unfortunately neither of these successfully made it through the legislative process.
“My colleague Marilyn Gladu, the former Shadow Minister of Health, put forth Private Member’s Bill C-277 to promote palliative care as an alternative to medically-assisted dying, promoting compassion and care for those suffering. The special committee that studied the Carter decision regarding MAID said that without access to good quality palliative care, a true choice was not available. C-277 received Royal Assent at the end of 2017. Sadly, the current federal government broke a key election commitment to invest $3-billion in long-term care, including palliative care. A Conservative government will support ensuring palliative care services are available for all Canadians.
“My colleagues and I have also been extremely concerned to hear that veterans have been offered MAID as alternative to the supports they should be receiving from this government. The Shadow Minister for Veterans Affairs worked on this file and you can obtain more information at these links. (Facebook and Instagram).
“We will continue to look for ways we can ensure vulnerable Canadians – including those in the disabled community – are protected.”
