Sweeping Surveillance: Bill C-22
June 1, 2026
Conservatives agree that police need effective tools to crack down on online crimes. We also believe that police should be able to obtain lawful access to necessary evidence – with proper authorization – when they investigate serious crimes. However, powers such as these are so significant. They must be narrowly targeted, technologically feasible, and there must not be any breach of Charter rights or infringement on Canadians’ privacy.
As it’s currently written, Part 2 of Bill C-22 is too broad. It puts the privacy, security, and freedom of all Canadians at risk and is creating economic uncertainty as major companies are threatening to leave Canada with growing fears that this bill will lead to government overreach, and encryption breaking. Some companies are even warning Canadians of surveillance. Even the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has concerns and has requested the Liberals make multiple amendments, which you can read here. Other agencies speaking out include the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency, stating “given the scope of new powers in this bill timely and effective review, is essential. ”
Given these reasons, Stephanie and her Conservative colleagues believe that the Liberals’ proposed Bill C-22 raises serious privacy concerns and a brings with it a market risk – it must not be rushed.

As it stands now, Bill C-22 is being considered at committee where Conservatives will be pushing for amendments which address these serious concerns. They will work to hold the Liberals accountable in an effort to ensure a bill that protects Canadians and has “a balance of privacy rights with law enforcement and national security agencies’ ability to access information.”
Many constituents have shared their concerns and frustrations surrounding Bill C-22 with Stephanie and she encourages anyone who is worried about the potential impact of this legislation to share their concerns directly with it’s sponsor, Minister of Public Safety Gary Anandasangaree at gary.anand@parl.gc.ca .
