Prices in Canada continue to go up under Mark Carney’s government, and many of them are automatic, meaning that Parliament does not approve them (cost of postage, alcohol, passports etc.) Does this increasing reliance on ‘escalator’ taxes concern you? Let me know here!

NHP Update – Liberals admit regulatory changes are nothing more than red tape

October 22, 2025

Ever since the Liberals announced in 2023 that they were going to make it more difficult for Canadians to access Natural Health Products  (NHPs), Conservatives have been doing everything they can to fight those changes, including tabling legislation to prevent the inevitable decreased selection and significant price increases.

The new labelling laws and fees contained in C-47 would have seriously impacted the availability of natural health products and caused many others to simply become unaffordable.

Canadians were vehemently opposed to the idea, but the Liberal government repeatedly insisted the changes were absolutely necessary.

Yet now they have quietly admitted these requirements were clearly not necessary at all, as they would only create red tape for businesses!  Buried in a document outlining reductions in red tape, is an item from Health Canada stating the department will postpone the new labelling regulations for NHPs for three years – until 2028.

While this will provide temporary relief for businesses (and consumers), it still leaves an element of uncertainty for the industry. The measures aren’t being withdrawn, they are simply being delayed. But the problem is, whether implemented today or in 2028 they will still be creating red tape, they will still raise the cost of NHPs and they will still result in certain products no longer being available to Canadians.

That is why it is so important that Conservative PMB C-224 receive the support of Parliament. As Stephanie and the bill’s sponsor MP Blaine Calkins discussed recently, it is important that this legislation be successful to ensure this issue is resolved permanently.
