Bill C-9 – An unprecedented attack on religious freedoms

Stephanie has received dozens of emails and calls from constituents expressing deep opposition to Bill C-9 (An Act to amend the Criminal Code (hate propaganda, hate crime and access to religious or cultural places).

She and her Conservative colleagues had serious concerns about C-9 when it was originally tabled by the Liberal government — and you can review some of those as outlined in the House of Commons by the Official Opposition Shadow Minister for Justice during speeches at 2nd Reading. 

Conservatives agreed to send the legislation to Committee for additional scrutiny and amendment, to see if it could be revised into a Bill they could support…. But that did not happen. Instead, the Liberals and Bloc joined forces to effectively criminalize religious texts.

As a result, as the Leader of the Official Opposition stated, Conservatives will be opposing C-9.

This amendment to remove the religious freedom safeguard from the Criminal Code will not make Canadians safer! And it will certainly not protect anyone — least among them people of faith – from hate.

Conservatives will fight tooth and nail to defend this reckless and unprecedented attack on our freedoms, and stand up for the Charter rights they are trying to tear down.

C-9 is currently at Committee stage. The Liberals will determine when the final vote on it will be.
